A multi-story building in Lyari Khada Market, an ancient area of Karachi, collapsed on another building. The body of a man has been recovered from the rubble while dozens of people are reported to be buried under the rubble.
According to preliminary information, a six-story residential building in Khadda Market, a densely populated area of Lyari, leaned to one side due to cracks, and residents were instructed to leave the building immediately.
While evacuating the occupants, the building collapsed on the adjoining building, both buildings collapsed, burying several people buried under the rubble and rescue operations are underway.
So far, the body of one person has been recovered from the wreckage while eight injured have been rescued and shifted to the hospital.
Eyewitnesses say the building had been shaking since morning and later tilted to one side. The collapsed building was 25 to 30 years old. Some people had left the damaged building safely, and some were unloading.
The Sindh Building Control Authority had declared the building dangerous a month ago. Despite being declared damaged by the SBCA, people were living there.
A large number of people are present at the spot due to which the rescue operation is facing difficulties. Police, Rangers and rescue teams of the concerned police station have reached the spot.
Sindh Governor Imran Ismail took notice of the collapse of a residential building in Lyari Khada Market and demanded a report from the Commissioner Karachi and SBCA. Directed to
