Former President Asif Ali Zardari’s arrest warrant issued
ISLAMABAD: The Accountability Court has issued a warrant for the arrest of former President Asif Ali Zardari in the Toshakhana reference.
Islamabad Accountability Court Judge Syed Asghar Ali heard the Toshakhana reference against former President Asif Ali Zardari and two former prime ministers Nawaz Sharif and Yousuf Raza Gilani.
Asif Zardari, Nawaz Sharif, and Yousuf Raza Gilani are accused of receiving gifted vehicles, and the accountability court had on May 15 issued summons to the accused at the preliminary hearing.
Like the last hearing, Nawaz Sharif, Asif Zardari, and Yousuf Raza Gilani did not appear today.
During the hearing, Asif Zardari was represented by his lawyer Farooq H Naik, who told the court that the former president had applied for immunity.
Lawyer Farooq H Naik said that I am a senior lawyer, and I am giving a statement in the court that Asif Zardari will appear at the next hearing.
On this, the court said that it is a criminal case, and Asif Zardari will have to appear before it. Therefore his request for exemption from attendance is rejected.
Farooq Naik said that these are Corona days, Asif Zardari is also older. With his arrival, people will gather, and then there will be a rush. The court inquired whether Asif Zardari is Corona positive? To which the lawyer replied that I am here on his behalf.
Judge Asghar Ali remarked that he would give a long date so that Asif Zardari could appear in court again.
During the hearing, the prosecutor NAB said that there are three accused, in this case, the court has issued warrants in the name of Nawaz Sharif, they are in the UK, we sent them warrants through the Foreign Office.
The esteemed judge said that then they are issuing Proclaimed offender on the non-appearance of Nawaz Sharif and also issue arrest warrants for Asif Zardari.
Judge Asghar Ali remarked that Nawaz Sharif was deliberately not taking part in the proceedings, so his non-bailable arrest warrant could not be executed.
Later, the accountability court issued summons orders for Nawaz Sharif while issuing bailable arrest warrants for Asif Zardari.
